Homework in Chestnut Class
The homework expectation for Chestnut Class is:
- Reading 3 times a week for a minimum of 15 minutes. This should be recorded in reading diaries.
- Practice the weekly spellings. This can be completed in homework books or uploaded to Seesaw.
- Practice the appropriate time’s tables. This can be completed in homework books, uploaded to Seesaw, or completed on Times Table Rock Stars.
- Year 6 also has access to IXL for further home learning.
We always encourage any other learning that children wish to do at home and this can be brought into school or uploaded to Seesaw. Homework is due in on a Friday morning.
Reading in Chestnut Class
We use a whole-class guided reading scheme called Complete Comprehension. There are different characters who cover the strands involved in reading comprehension. The children learn all about the different questions that they might be asked within the reading strand and how best to answer them.
In order for the children to make progress with their reading, it is important that they read regularly at home and consider the different strands of comprehension. Thank you for your continued support with reading with your children.
We use brilliant texts for our Author work such as There’s A Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, King of the Sky and Runaway Robot.
Times Tables in Chestnut Class
Knowing our times tables up to 12 x 12 is something that we are hopefully confident with by the time we reach Year 5 and 6. In class, we carry out times table tests weekly, working our way through the times tables until we know we are confident with facts to 12 x 12. When we have completed this, we work on our ‘ultimate’ times tables which involve times tables beyond 12 x 12 and trickier questions such as square and cubed numbers.
We use Times Table Rock Stars (https://ttrockstars.com/) to help us to learn our times tables and we are set ‘Sessions’ each week as part of our homework. We can use TTRS to challenge each other and even the adults in school! We can play for coins to buy costumes for our rock star and we can see our individual score improving each time we play. We also love to beat the other local schools!
Spelling in Chestnut Class
In Chestnut Class, we focus on a spelling rule each week and are tested on this on a Friday. We learn about this spelling rule in class and practise our set spellings. We also learn some of our Year 5 and Year 6 spellings each term and are tested on these. We are encouraged to use these words and words of a similar length and difficulty in our work and we use dictionaries to support us when we find spelling a word tricky.
