School governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education

Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country (currently numbering over 250,000) and have an important part to play in raising school standards. The role of the governing body is absolutely key to the effectiveness of a school. Time and again Ofsted (the national inspection body for schools) has noted that the most effective schools demonstrate effective leadership and management – including by the governing body.

The Role and Responsibilities of the Governing Body:

  • help to clarify and then set the school’s aims and values.
  • make decisions on matters such as priorities and targets for improvement, and school policies.
  • ensure that the schools’ practices are compliant with all statutory/legal requirements.
  • oversee the setting and use of the school’s budget ensuring that the money is well spent
  • are responsible for the appointment of the headteacher and deputy head
  • monitor, support and challenge the headteacher (act as a critical friend) on how well school policies and the priorities in the school improvement plan (SIP) are being followed through.

Ide governors comprise a group of volunteers that includes elected parent governors, members of the local community (co-opted governors), together with the headteacher, deputy head and one elected staff governor.

We come from varied professional backgrounds so have a good mixture of expertise and skills.

Full governing body meetings take twice a term.  In addition, governors visit the school once a term as part of their monitoring /support role. This provides governors with a welcome opportunity to get to know the staff and children and to share in the day-to-day work and achievements of the children, their teachers and other staff.

Attendance at meetings

Governors have been asked to attend all meetings from January 2018.
To provide evidence of good governance we are required to be achieving 80% attendance over the course of the academic year.
