Curriculum

Leading directly from our values of kindness and respect, individual best, curiosity and teamwork, our purpose at Ide Primary is to connect our children as local citizens of today with the ideas, skills and knowledge that they will need as the global citizens they will become.

As a village school on the very edge of the city of Exeter, we have designed our curriculum so that children engage in frequent, meaningful dialogue about the wonders of diversity and the importance of mutual respect and tolerance in Ide, Exeter, the UK and beyond.

We have created a contextually relevant curriculum that provides our children with a framework of knowledge-engaged enquiry with which to be curious, ask probing questions and be brave in finding solutions. Our aim is for our children to be invested in what they learn about.

This is why you will hear our children talk about themselves as- for example- authors, historians, philosophers, engineers and linguists.

Our children use and apply their growing knowledge and skills to think about how they individually and collaboratively can make a positive difference- increasing quality of life and happiness for themselves and others. We have designed the curriculum so that our children learn about ways to protect the world for the future and start to understand the principles of sustainable development.

We are determined that each child must have equal access our curriculum, and we annually set and review equality objectives to ensure that every pupil can succeed and flourish. Our current objectives are:

1. Ensure that parents of pupil premium pupils or pupils with SEND are fully and regularly informed about their children’s progress.
2. To close the gap in between reading age and chronological age for SEN pupils.

Knowing Children as Individuals

We know that children will only reach their potential if their education is built upon strong relationships with adults who care and take the time to know, respect and bring out the best in them through unconditional positive regard.

Our children know that the curriculum goes beyond the subject knowledge they gain in lessons; it is the experience they have from the moment they are welcomed through the door in the morning; at breakfast and after school clubs or during extra-curricular activities, assemblies, and playtime’s. Within this, pupil voice is key in developing the life of the school and all of our year 5 and 6 children have a leadership role.

Our curriculum draws pupils into the local community, for example through frequent visits to West Town Farm or as historians, exploring building materials and houses in the village to respond to the question ‘If the walls could talk, what would they say?’ Following on from a deep understanding of our local community, we also are ambitious in planning experiences for our children to build cultural capital on a national and international scale, through work with Historic England, the National Gallery, the School’s Shakespeare Foundation and Connecting Classrooms through Global Learning (CCGL).

We ask ourselves the question, when our children reflect on their primary education: how will they feel that their time at Ide empowered them to learn and live?
